A bank sent a warning to customers warning that certain SMS received by them could actually be a scam, also reported by CERT-RO the other day. Customers may receive deceptive messages, seemingly from a courier service, which may contain viruses that steal personal data from the infected phone.

False messages (e-mails) were also reported, sent on behalf of the Romanian Post Office, regarding the receipt of a parcel.

"Your package is in transit and has almost reached its destination.

Get the pack.

Tax rates.

Due to the procedure, a small fee still remains to receive the package. It is to cover taxes and other miscellaneous expenses.

What do I do now?

The following link contains instructions for reviewing your data and resolving charges. It's simple", says the fake message, which refers to the "Continue" button, writes cluj24.ro.

Cybersecurity specialists have warned that such messages must be deleted and that those who received them should not press the "Continue" button and provide the requested data under any circumstances.

ING's notice to customers

"In case you haven't seen the warning from CERT-RO and SRI-Serviciul Mân de Informazione, through the National Center of Cyberint, these days a malware campaign is underway that targets mobile phones and aims to obtain the credentials of all applications from your mobile phone, including mobile banking applications. As part of this campaign, SMS messages are sent that appear to be sent by a real service provider, most often a courier company. People who receive the SMS are invited to access a link to check the delivery status of a previously placed order. The text within the message can be "Your package is on its way, track it here."

How scammers work

These types of SMS were first reported by CERT-RO, a few days ago. Thus, according to CERT-RO, the phishing campaign also uses the identity of a well-known courier company, and the messages sent are of the SMS type. Users are invited to access a link to check the delivery status of a previously placed order. The text within the message is "Your package is on its way, track it here."

If the link is accessed, a Trojan-type malware application will be downloaded to the user's device, which will extract data about the mobile device (model, operator details, IMEI, etc.), data associated with bank cards and the operations performed with them, as well as his messages and calls.

It also has the ability to take screenshots, add and retrieve events from the calendar, and also capture the strings entered from the keyboard. The app asks for permissions to manage SMS and calls, access device data, contacts or full control over the device.
