The Romanian police is going to invest no less than 1.7 million lei in software meant to allow the extraction of data from mobile phones and other computer devices. According to the auction initiated by the Romanian Police, it wants 38 software applications that will allow it to conduct computer searches and 38 portable computer systems of forensic type.
This software should be able to extract data from terminals iPhone, Samsung, ASUS, Blackberry, Huawei, Lenovo, LG, Nokia, Philips, Motorola, etc. Regardless of the security measures that these terminals may have, the software should be able to break them to extract SMS messages, contacts, call list, pictures, movies, application list, location information visited and many others.
The Romanian police want to buy software that can break no less than 8700 types of mobile phones, and among them will be many iPhone and iPad models. With the exception of the iPhone 7, almost all the others running iOS 10 can most likely be broken by security companies, especially since there is a public jailbreak for them.
Moreover, the software should be able to remove the security codes set in the phones, which is a big problem for the iPhone. We know from last year that the FBI paid a lot of money to decode an iPhone, and the Romanian Police wants in the same money to buy software that will decode many other models of mobile phones.
The 1.7 million lei that the Romanian Police has allocated for this acquisition will probably not cover the amount needed to buy something of quality, but we will see more if someone will offer to honor the auction.
