In January, Motorola (Lenovo) presented the Motorola One Hyper charging station for the first time. Through this technology, the company demonstrated that smartphones can be charged from a distance of 80 or 100 cm, completely wirelessly. Motorola today announced a partnership to develop this technology and make it available to everyone soon. We have details below.
Motorola has partnered with GuRu Wireless to add support for over-the-air wireless charging to the company's smartphones. GuRu is a company specialized in customizing over-the-air systems that use "millimeter wave integrated circuits, modules and patented Smart Lensing RF technology". It's quite an interesting move considering Motorola doesn't usually bring traditional wireless charging to all its phones. Thus, the company would bring over-the-air charging to its flagships in the first phase.
Motorola devices would use Smart Lensing RF technology patented by GuRu. Thus, on board the terminals there will be special antennas that will be able to capture electricity from a distance, precisely. I remind you that the Motorola One Hyper charging station stopped when it detected an object in front of the transmitter to protect the health of users. Thus, accuracy within this system is very important.
It remains to be seen what will result from the new partnership between Motorola and GuRu. It will most likely be a good few months, maybe even a few years before this charging technology is commercially available. And Xiaomi introduced Mi Air Charge this year, a similar charging technology. However, the Chinese company only showed us a concept, while Lenovo (Motorola) presented the technology in a hands-on video.
