This is the warning given by the cyber security specialists from Israel and confirmed by our experts. WhatsApp is considered by experts to be the most secure communication application because it has encrypted data. Even so, criminals actually use the voicemail box, which is not secure enough.
The steps that hackers take to access another person's WhatsApp account from another phone are not complicated. You are in danger if you have voice mail enabled on your phone and an easy-to-guess PIN.
Liviu Arsene, cybersecurity specialist: "It is a real danger, but the vulnerability is not in the application, but rather the attackers exploit the way the mobile operator is used in the authentication process."
But the timing of hacking is critical. You must not answer the phone for at least a quarter of an hour. I retraced my steps into a cybersecurity firm with the help of an expert.
Mihai Vasilescu, cybersecurity specialist: "To prove the attack, we start with the attacker's phone, enter the victim's number in the application. To authenticate you must enter a code that is sent to the victim's phone. We try by call. code enters voicemail. "
From here, accessing a voicemail from a phone other than the victim's is possible by dialing certain phone numbers that are posted on the operators' websites. Romanian companies have mechanisms by which they force or advise customers to set their complex PINs.
Luminiţa Bud, mobile phone fraud expert: "Voicemail service allows customers to listen to their messages on another device, it can be a landline or mobile phone and with the help of the PIN code to listen to messages. activation has a code 1,2,3,4. "
That's what we did and we succeeded.
In addition, the application on the victim's phone is blocked for 9 hours after the attack. To avoid this situation, cybersecurity specialists and operators recommend securing your voicemail with complex 8-digit codes.
And for the chat application, it's a good idea to enable two-step security, which adds additional code. We contacted WhatsApp to provide more details about the security measures, but so far we have not received a response.
